Where tests run

  • Local emulators for development, and in CI where runners allow hardware acceleration.
  • Device clouds such as BrowserStack, Sauce Labs and AWS Device Farm for many real models; see BrowserStack alternatives.
  • Firebase Test Lab until it shuts down on September 30, 2027; see what to move to.

AI QA tools and AI agents

AI QA products such as testRigor, Momentic, QA Wolf, AskUI and Repeato run tests from plain language or vision; compare them in AI QA testing for Android apps. Google's Journeys for Android Studio and the Firebase App Testing agent are in preview.

The other route is the coding agent you already use. Phonebox gives Claude Code, Codex or Cursor a cloud Android phone over a hosted MCP server, CLI or SDK, at $0.06 a minute:

Paste into your agent
Build the debug APK and install it on my Phonebox phone.
Walk through the onboarding and settings screens I changed in this branch.
Read the screen before every action. Report anything that looks broken,
with the screen text you saw. Park the phone when you finish.

Questions

What are the best mobile app testing tools in 2026?

For scripted tests: Espresso and UI Automator for native Android, Appium for cross-platform suites in any language, Maestro for quick YAML flows, Detox for React Native and Patrol for Flutter. For agent-driven checks, Phonebox gives AI coding agents cloud Android phones over MCP.

Which mobile testing tools have MCP servers?

As of October 2026, Appium (appium-mcp), Maestro (maestro mcp) and Patrol (patrol_mcp) have official MCP servers that run locally; mobile-mcp is a popular open-source one. Phonebox hosts an Android MCP server at https://phonebox.dev/mcp, with the phones included.
