Detox testing and AI agents: React Native end-to-end tests, plus an agent on a real Android build.
Detox facts from its project setup, environment setup and Android guide, checked October 13, 2026.
Detox and an agent side by side
| Detox | AI agent on Phonebox | |
|---|---|---|
| Works with | React Native apps only, 0.77 to 0.84 | Any Android app, React Native included |
| Build | An app APK and a test APK | The APK you ship, debug or release |
| Runs on | An emulator or attached device over ADB | A cloud Android phone over MCP, CLI or SDK |
| You write | Jest tests in JavaScript or TypeScript | A plain-language task |
| Best at | Stable regression checks in CI | New screens, exploratory passes, bug repros |
Using both
Keep Detox as the gate on every pull request. Detox's docs recommend plain AOSP emulator images over Google APIs images for stability. Then have your coding agent check the build a user would actually install:
Install the release candidate APK on my Phonebox phone over the current
version with --replace, so the existing test account stays signed in.
Run the journeys in docs/release-checklist.md one by one, reading the
screen before every action. Mark each pass or fail with what you saw.
Park the phone when you finish.Phonebox phones don't expose ADB, so Detox itself keeps running on your emulator; the agent uses the same release APK on a cloud phone.
Questions
What is Detox testing?
Detox is an open-source, MIT-licensed end-to-end testing framework for React Native apps on Android and iOS, maintained by Wix. Tests are written in JavaScript or TypeScript with Jest and run on an emulator, simulator or attached device.
Can an AI agent replace Detox tests?
No. Detox tests are deterministic and fast enough to gate every pull request. An AI agent on a cloud Android phone is better for exploratory checks of new screens and reproducing bug reports, next to the Detox suite.
